WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific

Section titled “WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific”

Mental health crisis services vary significantly across Asia & Pacific:

  • Major cities generally have better access
  • Rural/remote areas may have limited services
  • Island nations may have limited specialized services
  • Language barriers can be significant

Services operate in:

  • English available in many countries, especially major cities
  • Local languages (Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Bahasa, etc.)
  • Multiple dialects in countries like India, China, Philippines
  • Ask about language options when calling
  • Mental health stigma varies but is significant in many Asian cultures
  • Family-centered approaches are common
  • Traditional healing practices coexist with Western medicine
  • Some services integrate both approaches
  • Community and religious support networks are vital
  • Toll-free numbers (often starting with 1800, 0800, or short codes like 1323)
  • Other numbers may charge standard rates
  • International calling rates apply from outside the country

Many Asian crisis services now offer:

  • WhatsApp support (India, Pakistan, Malaysia)
  • Text messaging (Australia, New Zealand, Japan)
  • Email support (many countries)
  • Mobile apps in some locations

Where available:

  • Warmlines for emotional support (less common in Asia than Western countries)
  • Community mental health centers in larger cities
  • University counseling services (may serve broader community)
  • Faith-based counseling (temples, churches, mosques)
  • Traditional healers integrated with modern services in some areas

  • Text/SMS options available in Australia, New Zealand, some other countries
  • Video relay services emerging in some countries
  • TTY/TDD services limited but growing
  • Contact national Deaf associations for specific resources

For ongoing support:

  • Contact local mental health clinics
  • University counseling centers
  • NGO-run mental health services
  • Community health centers
  • Disability organizations
  • Faith communities
